Leading Through the Lull: How to Excel When You're Expecting a Shift

As leaders, we often find ourselves in a curious in-between space. We sense a transition is on the horizon—a promotion, a new role, or even a move to a different organization—yet the specifics remain hazy. We might not know when it's coming or exactly what it will look like. This period of waiting can be incredibly challenging.

It's tempting, in these times, to start mentally checking out. Our focus might waver, our energy might dip, and we might even begin to disengage from our current responsibilities, our teams, or our organizations. We tell ourselves, "What's the point? Things are changing anyway." But this is precisely when our leadership is tested most profoundly.

The True Mark of a Leader: Finishing Strong

Exercising leadership means showing up well, every single day, until the very end. It's about maintaining your integrity and the same level of energy you brought to your role, project, or position on day one—the day you looked at it with pride and excitement.

Think about it: how do you want to be remembered? Do you want to be the leader who faded out, or the one who left a lasting positive impact? True leadership means leaving your position or organization better than you found it. It’s about ensuring that your "ceiling" becomes the next person’s "floor," enabling them to reach even greater heights.

This isn't about hoarding knowledge or leaving behind secrets to success. It's about sharing what you know, mentoring those who will carry on your work, and helping them become the best version of themselves in that role. When you do this, you're not a stumbling block; you're a stepping stone, and your legacy becomes one of admirable impact.

Reflection Coaching Questions for Your Transition

If you're in that "in-between" stage, take some time to reflect on these questions. They can help you stay grounded, focused, and effective as you navigate your next steps:

  • What specific actions can I take today to ensure I'm contributing fully and effectively in my current role?

  • How can I leverage my current position to empower and prepare my team or successor for future challenges?

  • What knowledge, insights, or processes can I document or share to make the transition smoother for those who follow?

  • In what ways can I demonstrate my commitment and integrity, even when I'm feeling uncertain about the future?

  • What legacy do I want to leave in my current role or organization, regardless of when my transition occurs?

  • How can I use this period of waiting to further develop myself, so I'm even better prepared for my next opportunity?

Remember, the way you navigate this waiting period speaks volumes about your character and your leadership. Choose to finish strong, and set yourself and your organization up for continued success.
