In a previous blog post, I shared my journey leading up to my 50th birthday, including my experience competing in my first jiu-jitsu competition after just six weeks of training. Today, I want to focus on my third match. You might be wondering why I’m discussing the third match when I lost the first two. Trust me, I had the same question when I found out I had to compete again!
Reflecting on my first match, I was quickly caught in an arm bar and lost almost immediately. In the second match, I managed to stay in the game for the full five minutes but ultimately lost on points. I previously mentioned how the voice of my opponent’s coach seemed to drown out my own coach’s guidance, which affected the outcome.
After that second round, I was exhausted—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I sat down, almost relieved that I wouldn’t have to go through it again. "One and done," I thought. I had challenged myself, and although my ego was bruised, I felt no desire to continue. But then my coach informed me that I was advancing to the next round based on my points, with only ten minutes to recover.
Internally, I was crafting excuses to avoid stepping back onto the mat. Yet, something deep within me—a refusal to quit—urged me to move forward. When my name was called, my legs shook as I approached the mat, my body protesting every step. Facing an opponent who was 30 years younger and 15 pounds heavier, and had years of training under her belt, I knew this battle would be as much mental and emotional as it was physical.
To my surprise, as the match began, I could hear my coach’s voice clearly—something that hadn’t happened before. His perspective shifted, and I had to trust his guidance. Following his instructions, I sensed fear in my opponent’s eyes within seconds. That fear ignited a fire within me—a determination to take control. Within ninety seconds, I applied a blood choke, and my opponent tapped out. From two losses, I had turned the tide to win my final match and secure third place overall.
This experience made me reflect on how often we face challenges and consider giving up, especially after repeated setbacks. How many times do we abandon our pursuits just before we reach our breakthrough? This isn’t just about sports—it applies to our careers, goals, and dreams.
Imagine persevering until you achieve that sweet victory. What shifts could occur in your life? Do you have someone in your corner, a mentor or coach, who offers a fresh perspective? Are you ready to step out of your comfort zone, confront obstacles head-on, and breathe life into your dreams?
